In digital systems, clipping manifests as samples reaching the maximum representable value; in analog systems, nonlinearity near supply rails produces distortion. The impact depends on context, ranging from subtle harmonic alteration to severe loss of intelligibility or image quality.

Techniques used to manage clipping include careful gain staging to establish suitable headroom, automatic gain control, and dynamic range processors such as compressors and limiters.
