Classsignaling is a term that has emerged in discussions surrounding social inequality and the ways in which individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds navigate and present themselves in various social contexts. It refers to the subtle cues, behaviors, and choices that individuals make, often unconsciously, to signal their social class to others. These signals can encompass a wide range of aspects, including speech patterns, vocabulary, accents, fashion choices, consumption habits, leisure activities, and even posture and body language.

The concept of class signaling suggests that these signals are not merely random personal preferences but are often learned and internalized through socialization within a particular class environment. For instance, certain ways of speaking or appreciating particular forms of art or culture might be associated with a specific social stratum. Conversely, the absence of these signals or the presence of others can also serve to identify individuals as belonging to a different class. This process can occur in various settings, such as educational institutions, workplaces, and social gatherings, influencing perceptions, interactions, and opportunities.

Understanding class signaling is important for comprehending the dynamics of social stratification and the ways in which class is reproduced and maintained. It highlights the often invisible mechanisms through which social boundaries are reinforced and how individuals may experience social mobility or immobility based on their ability to adopt or recognize these signals. While some interpretations view class signaling as a form of conformity or an attempt to assimilate, others see it as an expression of identity and belonging within a particular social group.
