Clarisses
Clarisses refers to members of the Order of Saint Clare, commonly known in English as the Poor Clares. It is a Catholic women’s religious order founded in 1212 in Assisi, Italy, by Saint Clare of Assisi with guidance from Saint Francis of Assisi. The order follows the Rule of Saint Clare, approved by Pope Innocent IV in 1253, which calls for poverty, chastity, and obedience. Historically, Clarisses have lived in enclosed convents, dedicating themselves to contemplative prayer and spiritual service, with a life of austerity and manual labor.
The order grew across Europe and beyond, establishing monasteries that became centers of prayer and charity.
