Circolarità

Circolarità, often translated as circularity, is a concept that describes a system where resources are kept in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them whilst in use, and then recovering and regenerating products and materials at the end of each service life. This contrasts with the traditional linear model of "take-make-dispose," which generates waste and depletes natural resources.

The principles of circolarità emphasize designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. This involves strategies such as product longevity, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and recycling. The aim is to create closed-loop systems where materials flow continuously, minimizing the need for virgin resources and reducing environmental impact.

Key aspects of circolarità include sustainable design, which considers the entire lifecycle of a product from its inception. It also involves new business models, such as product-as-a-service, where consumers pay for the use of a product rather than owning it outright, incentivizing manufacturers to create durable and repairable items. Economic benefits are also a significant driver, as circular economy models can lead to cost savings, new revenue streams, and job creation. The concept is gaining traction globally as a framework for achieving sustainable development and addressing pressing environmental challenges.
