Chungcheongnamdo

Chungcheongnam-do, or South Chungcheong Province, is a province in the west-central part of South Korea. It is bordered by North Chungcheong to the east, Jeollabuk-do to the southwest, and the Yellow Sea to the west. The province surrounds Sejong City, a separately administered municipality that hosts national government offices. It contains several inland counties and coastal areas, with major urban centers including Cheonan, Asan, Nonsan, Dangjin, Seosan, and Gongju.

Geographically, the landscape combines eastern highlands with expansive western plains and a long coastline along the Yellow Sea. The province experiences a temperate climate with distinct seasons, including hot summers and cold winters. Its coastal regions feature beaches and tidal areas that support tourism and fisheries, while inland areas are more focused on agriculture and industry.

Historically, the area was part of the ancient Baekje Kingdom, and it preserves important Baekje-era sites such as Gongju’s Gongsanseong fortress and Buyeo’s relics. These locations are part of the Baekje Historic Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage–listed ensemble. Local culture reflects traditional Korean heritage, with historical sites, seasonal festivals, and a mix of agricultural and industrial communities.

The economy of Chungcheongnam-do is diversified, combining agriculture with manufacturing and logistics. The region is known for rice and fruit production, coastal industries around Dangjin and Boryeong, and port facilities that support trade and mobility. Transportation access includes national highways and rail lines that connect the province with the rest of the country.

Tourism highlights include Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, the Taean coastal area and Taean Coastal National Park, and the Baekje historic sites in Gongju and Buyeo. The annual Boryeong Mud Festival is a notable regional event.
