Cholesterolspiegel

Cholesterolspiegel refers to the amount of cholesterol present in the blood. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is essential for building healthy cells, but high levels can increase the risk of heart disease. The body produces cholesterol, and it is also found in certain foods.

There are two main types of cholesterol relevant to blood tests: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, often called "bad" cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, known as "good" cholesterol. LDL cholesterol can build up in arteries, forming plaque that narrows them and restricts blood flow. HDL cholesterol helps remove LDL cholesterol from the arteries and transports it back to the liver for removal from the body.

A cholesterol test, also known as a lipid panel, measures the levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, another type of fat in the blood. The results are typically reported in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Optimal levels can vary based on individual risk factors, but generally, lower LDL and triglyceride levels and higher HDL levels are considered healthier.

Elevated cholesterol levels often have no symptoms and can only be detected through a blood test. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking, can help manage cholesterol levels. In some cases, medication may be prescribed by a doctor to lower cholesterol if lifestyle changes are insufficient.
