Chinaberry

Chinaberry, scientifically known as Melia azedarach, is a deciduous tree native to Asia and Australia. It is also commonly called the Persian lilac, bead tree, or Indian lilac. The tree is fast-growing and can reach heights of up to 15 meters, typically with a spreading canopy. Its leaves are compound, pinnately divided, and have a distinctive aromatic quality when crushed.

In spring, chinaberry trees produce clusters of fragrant, lilac-colored flowers that are attractive to pollinators. These flowers are followed by fruit, which are small, round drupes that ripen from green to yellow or brown. These fruits are often referred to as chinaberries or beads. They are known to be toxic to humans and animals if ingested due to the presence of saponins and other toxic compounds.

Despite its toxicity, chinaberry has been used in traditional medicine in some cultures, though caution is advised. The tree is adaptable and can tolerate a range of soil conditions and climates, which has led to its introduction and naturalization in many parts of the world, including the southern United States. In some regions, it is considered an invasive species due to its ability to spread aggressively. The wood of the chinaberry tree is sometimes used for furniture and crafts, and its seeds have been used for making beads and rosaries.
