Chikuzen
Chikuzen was a province of the old Japanese administrative system, located in the northern part of Kyushu Island. Its boundaries largely coincide with the southern portion of what is today Fukuoka Prefecture, while the western part of the former province became the neighboring province of Chikugo. The name Chikuzen (筑前) literally means “eastern Chiku,” distinguishing it from Chikugo, which means “western Chiku.” This naming convention reflects the historical practice of dividing larger territorial units into eastern and western sectors.
