Chalong

Chalong is a tambon (subdistrict) of Mueang Phuket District in Phuket Province, Thailand. It lies along the eastern coast of Phuket Island and includes coastal areas around Chalong Bay, as well as inland villages and residential communities. The subdistrict forms part of the greater Phuket Town area and serves as a gateway to southern Phuket’s beaches and islands. Its economy blends fishing, local commerce and the services that support tourism, including guesthouses, restaurants and tour operators.

The area is home to several notable sites. Wat Chalong, Phuket’s most important Buddhist temple, sits within Chalong and is dedicated to two revered monks who helped defend the island in the 19th century. The temple complex features chedi, murals and herbal medicine pavilions and draws pilgrims and visitors throughout the year. Chalong Bay is a sheltered inlet used by small boats and a growing destination for water-based activities. Chalong Pier serves as a departure point for boat trips to nearby islands such as Phi Phi and other dive sites, making it a focal point for island-hopping tours and marine activities. The Chalong Bay Distillery, which produces organic rum, is another notable business in the area and offers tours and tastings.

Transportation and access are centered on Phuket’s southern road network, with connections to Phuket Town and the island’s southern beaches. As a popular area for both residents and visitors, Chalong features markets, eateries and accommodations that support year-round tourism while retaining a local, community-oriented character. The climate is tropical and humid, with a dry season typically from November to April and a rainy season from May to October.
