Celticsounding is a term used in music criticism and media studies to describe a sonic approach that evokes Celtic cultural associations through melody, timbre, and arrangement. It is a descriptive coinage rather than a fixed genre, used to signal a set of aesthetic cues rather than a single tradition.

Core characteristics include modal melodies, especially using Dorian and Mixolydian scales, ceremonial harp-like textures, fiddle or violin lines, tin whistle or flute, bodhrán and other percussive textures, and drones or sustained pedal tones. The effect often relies on reverberant spaces, layered string or synth pads, and ornamented phrase endings reminiscent of traditional jigs and reels. Instrumental coloring tends to favor bright, airy timbres or earthy, breathy textures, depending on context.

Celticsounding appears across media contexts, most prominently in fantasy film scores, video games, and contemporary folk-inflected music. It functions as a shorthand for a "Celtic" aesthetic—evoking landscapes, myth, or historical pasts—without aiming to reproduce any specific Celtic nation’s repertoire. Critics note that while effective for atmosphere, the trope can mask cultural diversity and risk stereotyping or cultural appropriation when used indiscriminately.
