Special derivatives of cellulose find use in biomedical engineering, where cellulose derivatives such as carboxymethylcellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose are employed as wound dressings, laxatives, and in drug delivery systems. Nanocellulose, a finer form of cellulose, has gained attention for its mechanical strength and high surface area, making it suitable for composites, coatings, and nanofluidics.

Cellulose’s biodegradability and low environmental impact have made it a focus of research into sustainable materials. Engineers are developing bio‑based plastics from cellulose fibers, while chemists are exploring methods to convert cellulose into fuels and other value‑added products.
