Cellosolve

Cellosolve is a common name for a group of organic solvents known as ethylene glycol ethers. The most prevalent member of this group is 2-ethoxyethanol, often referred to as ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. These compounds are characterized by their ability to dissolve both water and many organic substances, making them versatile in various industrial applications.

Cellosolve solvents are typically colorless liquids with a mild, ether-like odor. Their dual solubility properties stem from the presence of both an ether linkage and a hydroxyl group within their molecular structure. This makes them effective in formulations such as paints, varnishes, lacquers, inks, and cleaning products. They can help to improve flow and leveling characteristics in coatings and act as coupling agents to blend otherwise immiscible components.

Historically, cellosolve solvents were widely used. However, concerns have been raised regarding their potential health effects, particularly reproductive and developmental toxicity.
