Cellesituasjonen

Cellesituasjonen is a compound Norwegian term that translates to "the cell situation" or "cellular state." In biology and medicine, the term is used informally to describe the overall status of a cell at a given time, including its viability, cell-cycle position, and functional condition, as influenced by internal programs and external conditions.

A cell's situasjon encompasses multiple dimensions: cell cycle phase (G0/G1, S, G2/M), viability or apoptosis, metabolic activity and energy status, differentiation or stemness, signaling activity, and subcellular localization of organelles and proteins. The microenvironment—nutrients, oxygen, pH, signaling molecules—also shapes the cell's state and can push it toward proliferation, quiescence, differentiation, or stress responses.

Researchers describe the cell's situation using assays and measurements such as DNA content analysis, Annexin V/PI staining for viability, ATP and NADH levels, ROS measurements, and metabolic flux analyses (Seahorse assays). Imaging and transcriptomics at single-cell resolution also reveal the cell's state. In culture, factors like confluence, nutrient availability, and drug exposure are common drivers of the cellesituasjonen.
