Cavitations

Cavitations, in fluid dynamics, refers to the formation, growth, and implosive collapse of vapor-filled cavities or bubbles in a liquid. It occurs when local pressures fall below the liquid’s vapor pressure, or when a liquid experiences rapid pressure changes. Nuclei such as dissolved gas, impurities, or pre-existing microbubbles provide sites for bubble formation. Cavitation is common in fast-flowing fluids and can occur in natural settings as well as in engineered equipment such as pumps and propellers.

Bubble dynamics proceed through initiation at low pressure, subsequent growth while the driving pressure remains low, and collapse when pressures rise. The collapse can generate shock waves, microjets, and localized heating, with intensity depending on the driving conditions and the size of the bubbles. Distinct regimes include incipient cavitation, developed cavitation, and cloud cavitation, where many bubbles collapse in a collective event.

Impacts of cavitation include noise and vibration, reduced efficiency, and material damage from imploding bubbles. Erosion can affect blades, impellers, valves, and seals, and cavitation can alter flow characteristics and contribute to structural fatigue. In many systems it is undesirable and mitigated through design or operating changes.

Applications and mitigation: Cavitation is exploited in ultrasonic cleaning and sonochemistry, where bubble activity assists surface disruption and chemical processes. In medicine, controlled cavitation underpins certain focused ultrasound therapies and contrast-enhanced imaging, aiding drug delivery and tissue interaction. Engineering approaches to mitigate cavitation include redesigning blades and components, applying coatings, increasing system pressure, and controlling flow conditions to maintain stable cavitation or suppress bubble formation; monitoring methods include acoustic emission analysis and imaging techniques.
