Carterornis
Carterornis is a genus of birds in the family Thraupidae, commonly known as tanagers. The genus was named in honor of American ornithologist Robert Carter Jr. Carterornis is native to the tropical forests of South America, particularly in the Amazon basin and the Guianas. The genus includes two recognized species: Carterornis castaneiventris and Carterornis chrysomela. Both species are medium-sized birds with vibrant plumage, characterized by their bright yellow or orange underparts and green or blue-green upperparts. They are known for their distinctive calls, which are often described as a series of sharp, metallic notes. Carterornis species are generally found in pairs or small groups, and they feed on fruits, berries, and insects. They are often seen perching on branches or foraging on the forest floor. Carterornis is not considered to be threatened, but habitat loss and degradation pose potential risks to their populations. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting and restoring their natural habitats.
