Carousel

A carousel, also known as a merry-go-round, is a rotating amusement ride featuring a circular platform with seats for riders. Traditional carousels present carved wooden horses and other figures mounted on poles; as the platform turns, the figures typically move up and down to simulate galloping.

Etymology and origins: The term carousel derives from French carrousel and Italian carosello, terms historically used for a roundabout equestrian performance. Carousels evolved from medieval and early modern court spectacles and equestrian games, later developing into mechanical forms at fairs and in amusement parks.

Design and operation: A typical carousel consists of a circular platform, a central axis, and rows of seats arranged around the edge. Figures such as horses, chariots, or other animals are affixed to poles that move in synchrony with the rotating platform, giving the illusion of motion.
