Caravaneering is the practice of traveling with a caravan, either a traditional caravan drawn by animals or a modern recreational vehicle. The term spans nomadic transport of people and goods as well as leisure travel in motorhomes and towables.

Historically, caravans have been used for trade for centuries, across the Silk Road, the Sahara, and Central Asia; nomadic groups depended on camel or horse caravans for movement and commerce. In the 20th century, caravaneering shifted toward recreation with the advent of motor vehicles and purpose-built caravans. Modern campers—self-contained motorhomes and towable caravans—allow travelers to live on the road with a compact dwelling.

Practice and equipment: Travelers plan routes, select campsites or caravan parks, and maintain vehicles. Common gear includes tow vehicles, hitch systems, stabilizers, awnings, water tanks, waste systems, and power sources such as gas, solar, or generators.

Regulations and safety: Drivers must comply with traffic laws, licensing, weight limits, and height or width restrictions. Caravan stability devices and proper loading reduce sway and the risk of accidents, while routine maintenance supports safe operation.

Culture and economics: Caravaneering supports a network of clubs and campgrounds and is associated with long-distance overland trips and cross-border travel. Critics note environmental concerns from fuel use and campsite impacts; advocates emphasize responsible travel, waste management, and minimal ecological footprint.

Geographic scope: It is popular in Europe, North America, Australasia, and parts of Asia and Africa, with regional variations in practice, equipment, and legal frameworks.
