CarMaker

A carmaker, or automobile manufacturer, is a company that designs, develops, and produces motor vehicles for street use. Carmakers typically oversee the full product cycle from concept and engineering to manufacturing, testing, marketing, and aftersales support.

Most carmakers operate multiple brands and own or control manufacturing facilities, supplier relationships, and distribution networks. They may produce a range of vehicles, including passenger cars, light trucks, SUVs, and commercial vehicles, from shared platforms and modular architectures. Some carmakers run vertically integrated operations, while others rely on a network of tiered suppliers and contract manufacturers.

Historically, carmakers emerged in the late 19th century and grew through mass production, notably using assembly line methods in the early 20th century. The industry has since consolidated into large multinational groups that own several brands and operate globally.

Today the sector faces rapid change driven by electrification, automation, connectivity, and regulatory measures on emissions and safety. Carmakers invest in electric powertrains, battery technology, autonomous systems, and software-defined vehicles, while managing supply chain constraints and capital-intensive manufacturing footprints.

Notable carmakers include Toyota, Volkswagen Group, General Motors, Ford, Hyundai Motor Group, BMW, Mercedes-Benz Group, and Tesla, among others. The term also includes niche and luxury manufacturers and regional players.
