Capim

Capim is a Portuguese term that broadly refers to grass. In Brazilian Portuguese the word is commonly used to designate grasses that are grown for forage, pasture, or lawn, as well as ornamental grasses used in landscaping. The term covers many species across several genera, rather than a single scientific group.

In agriculture capim grasses are central to grazing systems in tropical and subtropical regions. They are cultivated for animal feed, harvested as hay or silage, and managed through species selection, soil and water management, fertilization, and rotational grazing. Common forage grasses include several genera such as Brachiaria, Panicum, Paspalum, Cynodon, and Chloris; their specific suitability depends on climate, soil, and management practices. Some are perennial and provide long-term pasture, while others are used as seasonal crops.

In landscaping and lawns, capim varieties are valued for growth habit, drought tolerance, and resilience to foot traffic. Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) and similar warm-season grasses are widely used in warm climates.

In cultural and herbal contexts, capim is also used as a generic name for aromatic grasses used in teas and traditional remedies, though this usage varies by region.
