CapMetro

CapMetro, officially Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, is a public transit agency serving the Austin, Texas metropolitan area. It was established to provide comprehensive public transportation and is governed by a board of directors appointed by member jurisdictions within the service area.

CapMetro operates a multi-modal network including bus services and Capital MetroRail. The bus network provides local, neighborhood, and express routes, along with park-and-ride facilities and mobility options. The rail component began service in 2004 as a commuter rail-style line linking downtown Austin with the northern suburb of Leander; it is currently marketed as CapMetro Rail, commonly referred to as the Red Line. The authority also provides paratransit service through MetroAccess for riders who cannot independently use fixed-route services.

Funding and governance: CapMetro's operations are funded through a combination of fare revenue, local sales taxes, state and federal grants, and capital financing. Its board maintains oversight of service planning, capital projects, and contracting with private operators for portions of the network.

History and planning: Since its inception, CapMetro has pursued expansions to increase coverage and reliability, including proposals for further rail extensions and improvements to ticketing and service integration with other regional transportation partners.
