Leander is a masculine given name of Greek origin, derived from Leandros, combining leōn meaning “lion” and aner meaning “man.” It has been used since antiquity and appears in literature and history as a classical proper name.

In Greek mythology, Leander of Abydos was a youth who fell in love with Hero, a priestess in Sestos. Each night he swam across the Hellespont to be with her, guided by a light from her tower. When a storm extinguished the light, Leander drowned, and Hero, discovering his body, is said to have died of grief. The story has inspired numerous adaptations in poetry and art, notably Christopher Marlowe’s Hero and Leander and later works by Lord Byron.

Geographically, Leander refers to a city in the state of Texas, United States, located in Williamson and Travis counties within the Austin metropolitan area. It is a growing suburban community with amenities and residential development serving the surrounding region.
