Cambiassero

Cambiassero is the third-person plural form of the Italian verb cambiare in the congiuntivo imperfetto, or imperfect subjunctive. It is used in subordinate clauses to express hypothetical, uncertain, or non-real situations, often in more formal or literary Italian. The form is built on the stem cambi- plus the imperfect subjunctive ending -assero, one of the standard third-person plural endings for this tense in -are verbs. An alternative but widely encountered spelling is cambiassero, and both forms are considered correct in ordinary modern usage.

In practice, cambiassero is found after certain conjunctions and in reported or hypothetical statements. It typically appears in clauses that depend on a main clause expressing doubt, possibility, opinion, necessity, or a condition. For example: Se loro cambiassero idea, procederebbero con il nuovo piano. Non è chiaro se loro cambiassero opinione. In sentences with a past or conditional main clause, the imperfect subjunctive reinforces the hypothetical sense, as in Se avessero cambiato idea, sarebbe stato diverso.
