Calkylius

Calkylius is a genus of moths in the family Crambidae, commonly known as grass moths. The genus contains a single species, Calkylius megaspilus, which is native to New Guinea.

The adult moths have a distinctive appearance with a predominantly white and gray coloration. Their wingspans typically range from 12 to 15 millimeters, supporting their small size and delicate appearance. The forewings have a serrated margin with a striking pattern of dark and light markings, while the hindwings have a more uniform grayish-brown color.

The species is primarily distributed in the mountainous regions of New Guinea, where it is one of the less commonly encountered Crambidae. Although specific habitats of the Calkylius megaspilus are not widely documented, their presence suggests a firm association with these areas.

Adult Calkylius moths are primarily active at dusk and in the early morning when the foliage is still damp with dew. While there is a certain amount of evidence suggesting their behavior around nectar plants, this aspect requires further research. Much is still unknown about their specific abiotic preferences and growth habits, which require further exploration through specialized ecological studies.
