Caching is a technique where frequently accessed data is stored in a temporary location (the cache) to speed up subsequent requests. However, when the original data changes, the cached copy can become stale, leading to incorrect information being served. Cache invalidation strategies define how to detect and handle these changes.

One common strategy is time-based invalidation, where cached items are automatically removed or marked as stale after a predefined period. This is simple to implement but can lead to serving stale data for the duration of the timeout, or unnecessarily invalidating data that hasn't changed. Another approach is explicit invalidation, where the system actively invalidates a cache entry whenever the underlying data is modified. This can be achieved through various mechanisms, such as event-driven updates or explicit commands from the application.

Write-through caching is a strategy where data is written to both the cache and the underlying data store simultaneously. This ensures that the cache is always consistent with the data store, but it can increase write latency. Write-behind caching, conversely, writes data only to the cache initially, with the update being propagated to the data store asynchronously. This improves write performance but introduces a risk of data loss if the cache fails before the write to the data store completes. The choice of strategy depends on the specific requirements of the application, balancing factors like data consistency, performance, and complexity.
