CTtutkimuksia, known in English as CT scans or computed tomography scans, are a type of medical imaging that uses X-rays to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. This technique involves a rotating X-ray source that circles the patient, and a detector array that measures the absorption of X-rays at multiple angles. A computer then processes this data to reconstruct detailed images, essentially like taking slices through the body.

CT scans are widely used for diagnosing a broad range of conditions. They are particularly effective for visualizing bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels. Doctors utilize CT scans to detect and monitor tumors, identify internal injuries from trauma, diagnose blood clots, evaluate bone fractures, and guide surgical procedures. The speed and accuracy of CT scans make them invaluable in emergency situations.

The procedure is generally painless and relatively quick. The patient typically lies on a table that moves through the center of the scanner, which resembles a large doughnut. Depending on the area being examined, a contrast agent may be administered intravenously or orally to enhance the visibility of certain tissues or organs. While CT scans involve radiation, the doses are carefully controlled and the benefits often outweigh the risks.
