CTpulmonaaliangiografia, often abbreviated as CTPA, is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the pulmonary arteries, which are the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs. It is a type of computed tomography (CT) scan that involves injecting a contrast dye into the bloodstream. This contrast material highlights the blood vessels, making them clearly visible on the X-ray images produced by the CT scanner.

The primary purpose of CTPA is to detect and diagnose pulmonary embolism (PE), a condition where a blood clot travels to the lungs and blocks an artery. Symptoms of PE can include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing up blood, and it can be a life-threatening condition. CTPA is highly effective in identifying these clots.

The procedure typically involves the patient lying on a CT scanner table. A small intravenous line is inserted into a vein, usually in the arm, through which the contrast agent is injected. The scanner then rapidly rotates around the patient, taking multiple X-ray images from different angles. These images are then reconstructed by a computer to create detailed cross-sectional views of the pulmonary arteries. The entire scan is usually very quick, often taking only a few minutes.

CTPA is generally considered safe, although potential risks include allergic reactions to the contrast dye and radiation exposure from the CT scan. Before the procedure, patients are usually asked about any allergies or kidney problems, as these can affect the choice of contrast agent or the procedure itself. The information obtained from a CTPA scan is crucial for guiding treatment decisions for patients suspected of having pulmonary embolism or other pulmonary vascular diseases.
