CTcolonografia

CT colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy, is a non-invasive medical imaging technique used to examine the colon. It utilizes a CT scanner to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the colon and rectum. These images are then reconstructed by a computer to create a three-dimensional view of the colon's interior.

The procedure involves the patient lying on their back and side on the CT scanner table. A small, flexible tube is inserted a short distance into the rectum to gently inflate the colon with air or carbon dioxide. This distension helps to spread out the colonic walls, making polyps and other abnormalities more visible. Contrast material may sometimes be used to further enhance the images. The patient is then scanned, typically taking only a few minutes.

CT colonography is primarily used as a screening tool for colorectal cancer and polyps, particularly in individuals for whom conventional colonoscopy is difficult or not feasible. It can detect polyps, masses, and other abnormalities within the colon. If significant findings are detected, a conventional colonoscopy is usually recommended for biopsy or removal of polyps.

The benefits of CT colonography include its non-invasive nature, shorter procedure time compared to conventional colonoscopy, and the ability to visualize the entire colon, including areas that may be difficult to reach with a traditional scope. However, it does involve exposure to ionizing radiation, although the dose is generally considered low. It also cannot perform biopsies or polyp removal, requiring a follow-up procedure if abnormalities are found.
