CRIcompatible is a designation used in the lighting industry to indicate that a light source or lighting system maintains color rendering performance aligned with established color rendering criteria and remains dependable when used with other CRI-based components or reference illumination conditions.

The term references the Color Rendering Index (CRI) framework developed under standards informed by CIE models. CRI commonly centers on the Ra metric, derived from rendering eight standard color samples, with extended metrics such as R9 for strong reds. CRIcompatible products are typically expected to deliver CRI ratings that are stable across typical use cases and compatible with standard CRI evaluation contexts, though it is not a formal certification in itself.

In practice, CRIcompatible products are described as meeting practical expectations for color accuracy across relevant correlated color temperatures (CCTs) and lighting scenarios. Relevant criteria often include a high Ra value (for general lighting, commonly 80 or above), a positive R9 where required for red fidelity, and consistent color rendering across common CCTs and operating conditions. Some definitions also emphasize stable spectral power distribution and minimal chromatic shifts with changes in drive current or temperature.

Testing and validation typically involve spectroradiometric measurement in calibrated facilities, calculation of CRI values (Ra and, where applicable, extended metrics), and verification under multiple CCTs and illumination contexts. This may be supplemented by newer metrics or industry guidance (for example, TM-30 or CQS) to provide additional color quality perspectives.

Use of the term is widespread in product specifications and marketing, particularly for architectural, commercial, and display lighting. It is not a formal, universally standardized label, and consumers should review comprehensive color metrics and testing conditions to assess suitability for specific color-critical applications.
