COZentrums

COZentrums is a non-profit, international network of research and practice centers focused on co-design and shared governance across urban, organizational, and digital domains. Established in 2012 by a consortium of five universities, three city administrations, and a think tank, COZentrums aims to create scalable frameworks for collaboration among public, private, and civil society actors. The network operates through regional hubs that coordinate research programs, knowledge exchange, and pilot implementations.

Governance is provided by a board of directors drawn from member institutions, an advisory council of external experts, and program committees that oversee research themes. Membership is open to universities, municipal bodies, research institutes, and industry partners, with annual dues and project-based funding.

Key activities include research on co-design methodologies, open governance and data sharing, and the design of shared infrastructure for cities and organizations. COZentrums publishes policy briefs, white papers, and case studies, and hosts an annual conference and a series of collaborative workshops. Notable projects have included a city-scale co-design lab, an open-data governance framework, and pilots for shared procurement platforms.

Funding comes from member contributions, public research grants (including European Union programs), and philanthropic support. The organization emphasizes transparency and replicability, with an emphasis on open access outputs and reproducible methods. Critiques have centered on governance complexity and the challenge of sustaining cross-sector collaboration across diverse legal regimes.
