CO2slukkere, or CO2 fire extinguishers, are portable devices that expel carbon dioxide gas to interrupt a fire by displacing the surrounding air. They are primarily used to protect electrical equipment and other areas where water-based extinguishing methods could cause damage or be impractical.

How they work and where they are most effective: When discharged, the extinguisher releases a high concentration of CO2, which blankets the fire and reduces the amount of oxygen available for combustion. The cooling effect is secondary. CO2 slukkere are most suitable for small electrical fires (Class C) and for flammable liquids (Class B) in occupied spaces where residue from other extinguishing agents would be undesirable. They leave no messy residue, which makes them attractive for server rooms, data centers, laboratories, and workshops with sensitive equipment.

Limitations and safety considerations: CO2 slukkere should not be used in occupied or poorly ventilated spaces, as the released gas can cause asphyxiation. They are not ideal for ordinary combustible fires (Class A) in large volumes or for cooking oil fires (Class F). After use, the area should be ventilated and the equipment inspected and recharged by qualified personnel. The extinguishers require regular maintenance and pressure checks to ensure operability.

Maintenance and standards: CO2 extinguishers are typically serviced according to national or regional standards, with periodic inspections and hydrostatic testing conducted by trained technicians. Portable units come in common sizes such as 2 kg, 5 kg, and 10 kg, with labeling indicating their class suitability and pressure status. Regular servicing and proper placement are essential for effective and safe use.
