CMYKväriavaruus refers to the subtractive color model used in color printing. CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black). This model is based on the principle that white light is composed of all colors, and by subtracting certain wavelengths of light, specific colors can be produced.

In printing, CMYK inks are applied to a white substrate, typically paper. Cyan ink absorbs red light, Magenta absorbs green light, and Yellow absorbs blue light. When these inks are combined, they subtract wavelengths from the incident white light, resulting in the perception of different colors. Black ink is included because mixing the three primary colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) does not produce a pure black and is often a less economical solution for achieving deep blacks.

The CMYK color space is device-dependent, meaning that the exact color produced can vary depending on the specific inks, paper, and printing press used. This is why color management is crucial in professional printing to ensure consistent and predictable color reproduction. Unlike additive color models like RGB, which are used for displays and emit light, CMYK is a subtractive model that relies on reflected light.
