CIELABE

CIELABE is an international collaborative platform dedicated to coordinating research, standards development, and practical applications in color science and ambient lighting. The project aims to harmonize measurement methods, color appearance modeling, and lighting design across sectors such as imaging, textiles, automotive, and architecture. The name signals its roots in the CIELAB color space and its focus on standardized evaluation environments.

CIELABE was established in 2016 by the Color Science Alliance, a consortium of universities and industry partners seeking to create shared frameworks for color measurement and lighting performance. Its early work focused on pilot studies in controlled lab settings and on defining interoperable data formats for color and luminance measurements.

The platform operates through working groups focused on measurement protocols, data management, color appearance models, and reference datasets. It maintains an open data portal and publishes guidelines that are intended to inform participants and standards bodies. These outputs are designed to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration and to support benchmarking across industries.

Applications span digital imaging, textile and paint matching, automotive color control, interior and street lighting design, and display manufacturing. By providing common benchmarks, CIELABE supports cross-industry interoperability and quality assurance.

Governance is overseen by a steering council with representatives from academia and industry. Membership is open to institutions that meet technical and ethical requirements, with funding sourced from grants, collaborations, and sponsorships.
