CHPkäyttö

CHPkäyttö refers to the operational use of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems. CHP, also known as cogeneration, is a process that simultaneously generates electricity and useful thermal energy from a single fuel source. This integrated approach significantly improves energy efficiency compared to separate generation of electricity and heat.

In a CHPkäyttö scenario, a prime mover, such as a gas turbine, steam turbine, internal combustion engine, or fuel cell, produces electricity. The waste heat generated during this process, which would otherwise be lost, is then captured and used for heating purposes. This captured heat can be utilized for space heating in buildings, industrial processes, or even for cooling through absorption chillers.

The primary benefit of CHPkäyttö is its high overall efficiency, often exceeding 80%, compared to the typical 30-50% efficiency of separate electricity and heat generation. This enhanced efficiency leads to reduced fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions. CHP systems are employed in a wide range of applications, including industrial facilities, institutional buildings like hospitals and universities, district heating networks, and even residential complexes. The economic viability of CHPkäyttö depends on factors such as fuel costs, electricity prices, thermal energy demand, and available incentives.
