CEmärket, commonly spelled CE-mark in English and CE-märket in Swedish, is the conformity marking used for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA). It signifies that a product complies with the essential health, safety, and environmental protection requirements laid out in EU or EEA harmonized legislation and standards. The mark is not a quality certification or EU endorsement; the mark indicates conformity as assessed by the manufacturer and applicable conformity assessment procedures.

Applicability varies by product category. Many products, such as toys, machinery, electrical equipment, and medical devices, require different conformity procedures and can involve testing, third-party assessment by a Notified Body, or self-certification by the manufacturer. The responsible party—usually the manufacturer or their authorized representative—must determine the applicable directives, conduct or commission the necessary tests, compile technical documentation, and issue an EU Declaration of Conformity.

Once conformity is established, the CE mark is affixed to the product, its packaging, or accompanying documents. In some cases it must be accompanied by the Notified Body number. The mark enables free movement of the product within the EEA and signals baseline compliance to regulators and customers. Post-market surveillance and changes to the product may require re-evaluation.
