CDIjärjestelmät, or CDI systems, refers to a category of injection systems used in internal combustion engines. CDI stands for Capacitor Discharge Ignition. This ignition system is known for its ability to produce a strong spark with a relatively short duration, leading to more efficient combustion compared to older systems. The core components of a CDI system include a capacitor, a transformer, a trigger mechanism, and a spark plug.

The process begins when the capacitor is charged by a power source, typically the engine's alternator or a battery. When the ignition system is triggered, usually by a signal from the engine's stator or a pulse generator, the capacitor rapidly discharges its stored energy. This high-energy discharge is then fed into a step-up transformer, which significantly increases the voltage. The extremely high voltage generated by the transformer is then delivered to the spark plug, creating a powerful spark across its electrodes.

CDI systems are commonly found in motorcycles, outboard motors, and some smaller gasoline engines due to their reliability and performance advantages. They are less susceptible to interference from electrical noise and can operate effectively at higher engine speeds. The precise timing and strong spark provided by CDI systems contribute to improved fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions. Their robust design often leads to longer service intervals and less maintenance compared to conventional ignition systems.
