This method is primarily used for nutrient placement, aiming to increase nutrient availability to the crop and reduce losses to the environment.

The core principle of bändäysmenetelmät is to place nutrients in close proximity to the plant's root zone, especially during the early stages of growth. This is often achieved by using specialized equipment that can deposit the material in a narrow strip along the planting row or beside it. Common types of banding include:

Starter banding involves applying fertilizer at or near the seed at the time of planting. This provides essential nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen to young seedlings, promoting vigorous early growth and helping them establish a strong root system.

Mid-row banding places the fertilizer in a band between crop rows, typically after the crop has emerged. This method can be useful for side-dressing crops that require additional nutrients during their growing season.

Deep banding involves placing nutrients at a greater depth in the soil, which can be beneficial for certain nutrients or in soils prone to nutrient fixation or leaching.
