Báriumsókat
Báriumsókat are chemical compounds that contain the element barium. Barium is an alkaline earth metal with the atomic number 56. Barium salts exhibit a range of properties and applications. Many barium compounds are insoluble in water, a notable exception being barium chloride. The characteristic bright green flame produced when barium compounds are heated is used in fireworks and flame tests in chemistry. Barium sulfate, BaSO4, is a particularly important barium salt. Due to its insolubility and high density, it is widely used as a radiocontrast agent in medical imaging of the digestive system. Patients ingest or are given an enema of barium sulfate, which coats the gastrointestinal tract, making it visible on X-rays. Barium sulfate is also used as a filler in plastics and paints and in the drilling industry. Other barium salts have various industrial uses. For example, barium carbonate, BaCO3, is used in the production of ceramics and bricks, and to remove sulfate impurities from brines. Barium sulfide, BaS, is used in pyrotechnics and as a depilatory. It is important to note that most soluble barium compounds are toxic, as the barium ion (Ba2+) can interfere with potassium ion channels in cell membranes. Therefore, handling of barium salts requires appropriate safety precautions.
