Buxhet

Buxhet is a term used in anthropology and community economics to describe a form of informal exchange in which participants trade goods and services without the use of formal currency. Buxhet networks typically operate on trust, reciprocity, and social ties, with members tracking exchanges through a simple ledger or through communal consensus rather than through formal financial institutions.

Etymology of the term is uncertain. It appears in several regional dialects and may derive from roots associated with giving or exchanging, though its precise origin is debated and may vary by community.

Origins and history of buxhet trace common patterns of informal exchange found in many cultures. Similar practices have long existed as mutual aid in rural and urban settings. In modern times, buxhet-like arrangements have reemerged in mutual aid networks, time banking, and local or community currencies, often emphasizing social cohesion and resilience in the face of economic stress.
