Butteri

Butteri are a traditional breed of cattle native to the Maremma region of Tuscany, Italy. These large, long-horned animals are characterized by their robust build, dark coat, and distinctive lyre-shaped horns. Historically, butteri were used as working oxen for plowing fields and herding the famous Maremmana horses, another breed closely associated with the region. Their strength and resilience made them well-suited to the marshy and challenging terrain of Maremma.

The butteri are a symbol of the region's agricultural heritage and are still maintained by a small number of dedicated farmers. While their role as working animals has largely diminished due to mechanization, they are now primarily raised for their meat, which is known for its lean quality and rich flavor.
