Bundesautobahn

Bundesautobahn is the German designation for the national network of motorways. These are high-speed, controlled-access roads that are a fundamental part of the German transportation infrastructure. The first Bundesautobahn was opened in 1935, and the network has expanded significantly since then, particularly after World War II.

The Bundesautobahn system is characterized by its high speed limits, with many sections having no posted speed limit, though a recommended speed of 130 km/h is often advised. In other sections, speed limits are strictly enforced. The roads are generally well-maintained and feature multiple lanes in each direction. They are distinguished by their blue signage with white lettering, indicating distances and destinations.

Traffic density on the Bundesautobahn can be very high, especially around major cities and during peak travel times, leading to congestion. Despite this, it remains one of the most efficient and widely used motorway systems in Europe, facilitating both national and international travel and trade. The responsibility for planning, construction, and maintenance of the Bundesautobahn lies with the federal government, specifically through the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes.
