Buckregulaatoreid, also known as buck converters or step-down converters, are a type of switch-mode power supply (SMPS). Their primary function is to efficiently reduce a direct current (DC) voltage from a higher level to a lower level. This is achieved through the controlled switching of semiconductor devices, typically transistors, in conjunction with inductors, capacitors, and diodes.

The basic operation of a buck regulator involves a switch that rapidly turns on and off. When the switch is on, current flows through an inductor, storing energy in its magnetic field. When the switch turns off, the inductor releases this stored energy, and the current continues to flow, but through a diode and to the output load. A capacitor at the output smooths out the resulting pulsed voltage, providing a more stable DC output. The ratio of the on-time to the total switching period, known as the duty cycle, determines the output voltage. A higher duty cycle results in a lower output voltage.

Buck regulators are widely used due to their high efficiency, which typically ranges from 70% to over 95%. This efficiency is significantly better than linear voltage regulators, especially when there is a large difference between the input and output voltages. Their compact size and ability to handle varying input voltages make them ideal for a broad range of applications, including battery-powered devices, power supplies for electronic equipment, and battery charging systems. They are a fundamental component in modern electronics for power management.
