Too low fuel pressure can lead to a lean fuel-air mixture, causing misfires, hesitation, loss of power, and potentially engine damage. This can be caused by a weak fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter, a faulty fuel pressure regulator, or leaks in the fuel lines. Conversely, excessively high fuel pressure can result in a rich fuel-air mixture, leading to poor fuel economy, increased emissions, fouled spark plugs, and potential damage to the catalytic converter. This might be due to a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator or a restricted return line.

Engine control units (ECUs) monitor and often adjust fuel pressure using a fuel pressure sensor and a fuel pressure regulator. The ECU uses information from various sensors, such as the mass airflow sensor and throttle position sensor, to determine the optimal fuel pressure for the current engine load and speed. Diagnostic tools can be used to measure and monitor fuel pressure, helping technicians identify and resolve fuel system issues. Checking and verifying fuel pressure is a common diagnostic step when troubleshooting engine performance problems.
