Bruttomäärityksen is a Finnish term that literally translates to “gross determination.” It refers to the calculation of a total or full amount of something—such as a price, weight, or value—before any deductions or subtractions are applied. The concept is widely used in accounting, taxation, and civil law where a “gross” figure is required as a basis for further processing, reporting, or legal compliance. For example, in corporate tax filings the Finnish Tax Agency (Verohallinto) demands the gross taxable income of a company as an initial step before issuing adjustments for deductions, allowances, and credits.

In commercial practice bruttomäärityksen is applied to the pricing of goods and services, where the gross price includes all applicable taxes (such as VAT), fees, and mark‑ups. The figure becomes the reference point for calculating net prices after removing taxes, rebates, or cost reductions. Similarly, in transport and shipping the gross weight of a cargo—measured as the weight of the container or goods plus packaging—is essential for determining freight charges, customs duties, and compliance with safety regulations. Construction contracts often use a gross quantity of materials to set prices per unit, with the net amount being derived after accounting for waste, loss, and spoilage.

Legally, bruttomäärityksen plays a role in estimating liability, insurance premiums, and environmental charges. The contrast with “netto” (net) determinations is important: while the net figure represents the value after all reductions, the gross figure sets the overall scale on which subsequent deductions are made. In many jurisdictions, reporting both gross and net amounts increases transparency and aids auditors and regulators in verifying that appropriate deductions and exemptions have been applied correctly.
