In German and many other languages, netto specifies values that exclude taxes, discounts, or additional costs, and it is commonly contrasted with brutto (gross). The term is also used to describe net weight or net quantity on product labels, meaning the actual content excluding packaging.

In retail, Netto is also a brand name for several supermarket chains in Europe. In Germany, Netto Marken-Discount operates as a discount grocery chain under the Edeka group. In Denmark, Netto refers to a separate discount grocery chain owned by the Salling Group. Although they share the same name, the German and Danish Netto chains are independent entities serving their respective markets.

Beyond pricing and branding, netto appears in international trade and consumer labeling as a standard descriptor. It is used on invoices, price lists, and labels to indicate values that do not include taxes or other charges, helping consumers and businesses distinguish net amounts from gross totals. The concept is widely familiar across German-speaking and Romance-language contexts, where netto and its cognates function similarly to denote the net value.
