Its primary function is to provide a secure and watertight closure system across the chest, replacing traditional front zippers that can be prone to water ingress and heat loss.

The design typically involves a long, flexible zipper that runs across the upper chest. This zipper is often accompanied by a flap or bib made of neoprene or a similar material, which lies underneath the zipper to create a secondary barrier against water.
