Bruddseighet, or fracture toughness, is a material property that describes the resistance of a material with a pre-existing crack to further fracture when exposed to an applied load. It combines strength and flaw tolerance to indicate how much stress a cracked component can withstand before crack growth becomes unstable. Fracture toughness is especially important for assessing the integrity of structures where small flaws can grow under service conditions, such as in metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites.

Fracture toughness is commonly expressed in terms of a critical parameter that depends on the loading mode. The most widely used is the critical stress intensity factor, K_IC, used for mode I opening (tensile) loading. Energy-based measures, such as the critical strain energy release rate, J_IC, are also used, particularly for materials and conditions where nonlinear fracture processes occur. In practice, standardized tests using specimens like compact tension (CT) or single-edge notch bending (SENB) are performed to determine K_IC or J_IC, following established standards.

Several factors influence bruddseighet, including material microstructure (grain size, phase distribution, precipitation), temperature, loading rate, residual stresses, environment (chemical exposure, humidity), and the presence of toughening mechanisms (crack deflection, phase transformation). It is not a fixed property; it depends on crack length, geometry, and the loading situation, as well as testing conditions.
