Brownsberg

Brownsberg is a natural reserve located in the Brokopondo District of Suriname. It is situated approximately 10 kilometers south of the Afobaka dam, near the Suriname River. The reserve encompasses a significant area of tropical rainforest, known for its rich biodiversity. It was established to protect the indigenous flora and fauna of this region.

The landscape of Brownsberg is characterized by its mountainous terrain, with elevations reaching up to 500 meters. Several waterfalls are present within the reserve, with the Leowatapata Falls being a notable feature. The reserve is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including various species of monkeys, sloths, jaguars, and numerous bird species. The vegetation is typical of a tropical rainforest, with tall trees, dense undergrowth, and a variety of plant life.

Brownsberg is a popular destination for ecotourism. Visitors can explore the reserve through a network of hiking trails, which offer opportunities for wildlife observation and enjoying the natural scenery. The area is managed by the Suriname Forest Management Agency (SBB). Access to the reserve is generally via a rough road from the nearby town of Brokopondo.
