Brokopondo
Brokopondo is a district in Suriname, located in the northeastern part of the country. It is the largest district by area, though sparsely populated. The district's capital is the town of Brokopondo. The economy of Brokopondo is largely based on mining, particularly bauxite, and logging. The Brokopondo Reservoir, a large artificial lake created by the Afobaka Dam, dominates a significant portion of the district and is a major source of hydroelectric power for Suriname.
The district is home to several Indigenous communities, including the Maroons, who are descendants of escaped
