History and development: The first records of Brillmere date to the 12th century, when a market charter established a trading site beside the river. The town expanded through the medieval period and revived in the 19th century with the arrival of the Northvale Main Line railway, which spurred processing and warehousing on the riverfront. In the late 20th century Brillmere reoriented toward services and light manufacturing and has since pursued town-centre regeneration.
