Brandweerman

Brandweerman is the Dutch term for a firefighter, a member of a fire department responsible for protecting life and property from fires and other emergencies. Brandweermans respond to structural fires, traffic accidents, floods, chemical spills, and medical incidents. In addition to extinguishing fires, they perform rescue operations, provide first aid, and participate in fire prevention and public safety education.

Training and qualifications: Entry typically requires completion of a vocational fire service program and successful physical fitness testing. Recruits learn firefighting tactics, search and rescue, ventilation, exposure to hazardous materials, and the use of equipment such as hoses, ladders, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Equipment and organization: Brandweermans wear protective clothing (bunker gear), helmets, gloves, and self-contained breathing apparatus. They work from fire stations and operate apparatus such as fire engines, aerial ladders, and rescue vehicles. Fire services can be professional, municipally administered, or volunteer-based in smaller communities; cross-border cooperation is common in regions with shared languages, such as the Netherlands and Belgium.
